Senate Roll Call on
2011 Senate Bill 5065: Preventing animal cruelty

Revises animal cruelty provisions by expanding the definition of necessary food and water and shelter to more closely meet the needs of and sustain animals. Necessary food is defined as the provision at suitable intervals of wholesome food stuff suitable for the animal's age and species that is sufficient to provide a reasonable level of nutrition for the animal and is easily accessible to the animal. The bill prohibits violators not just from owning specified animals, but from living with them. It also imposes a fine of one-thousand dollars for the first violation, and two-thousand five hundred dollars for a second violation. Subsequent violations are a gross misdemeanor.
