2011 Senate Bill 5354: Adding heart attacks and strokes as occupational diseases for law enforcement and firefighters
Introduced by Sen. James Hargrove (Hoquiam) (D) on January 21, 2011
To include heart attacks and strokes as presumptions of occupational disease for law enforcement officers and firefighters who while on duty engaged in situations that involved nonroutine stressful or strenuous physical law enforcement, fire suppression, rescue, hazardous material response, emergency medical services, prison security, disaster relief, or other emergency response activity. (Companion: HB 1445).   Official Text and Analysis.
Referred to the Senate Labor, Commerce & Consumer Protection Committee on January 21, 2011
Substitute offered in the Senate on February 18, 2011
To re-draft the language so that the law enforcement presumption is similar to the existing presumption in state law for firefighters rather than similar to federal law. The proposed substitute also extends the presumption for law enforcement officers to cover heart problems rather than heart attacks, and applies the presumption regardless of whether the law enforcement officer dies as a result of the heart problems or stroke.
Referred to the Senate Ways & Means Committee on February 18, 2011
