2007 House Bill 2228: Providing additional motor vehicle liability insurance requirements.
Introduced by Rep. Joyce McDonald, (Puyallup) (R) on February 14, 2007
To make modifications to motor vehicle registration and insurance requirements. Currently, drivers must meet the state’s financial responsibility requirements by having automobile liability insurance to drive on the public roadways. Drivers may also self-insure under certain circumstances, or they may also post a liability bond. The bill would require drivers who no longer have automobile liability insurance or proof of financial responsibility to notify the Department of Licensing. Insurance companies would be required to notify the department of all auto liability insurance cancellations or non-renewals. Registered owners would have 30 days to either retain a new auto insurance policy or meet the state’s financial responsibility requirements. Failure to do so would cancel the vehicle’s registration immediately without refund. The bill would also require law enforcement officers to impound a vehicle when the driver cannot provide proof of liability insurance, self-insurance, or a liability bond. The vehicle’s owner would be responsible for all costs of the impoundment and must provide proof of insurance or financial responsibility in order to recover the vehicle.   Official Text and Analysis.
