This bill is just plain wrong. First, the amount of nitrates coming from septics is so vanishingly small compared to other sources that the Canal will never see the difference (USGS estimates that less than 1/4 of one percent of the nitrogen entering the Canal comes from near shore septics) Second, the UW study of the cause/effect on dissolved oxygen is not complete -- so we don't have any science to support the bill. Third, the only winners from this bill are the companies that design and build the nitrate removing septic systems -- the people that have been lobbying Rep. Eickmeyer for years to get this bill passed. The real losers are the property owners who will now have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to install these systems and get them inspected every year. Is anyone looking out for the interests of the citizens of this state?
