This RCW is in need of change, updating the definition of a veteran, adding cremation to funeral benefits and removing "almshouses" from the codes. That is all, but additional proposed changes will accomplish the removal of all the nationally chartered veterans organizations from "veterans relief".
The term "must solicit", needs to be replaced by "must appoint", to assure the appointment of veterans to the new veterans board by the county legislative authority. The nationally chartered veterans organizations must be left in the RCW's to assure that there will be a true representation of veterans, by veterans elected by veterans.
The statement of "other entities" must be removed to preserve the centralized, one stop source for veterans relief. This will make it easier for needy veterans to access assistance, and will keep expenses to a minimum as veteran volunteers do so at no expense. The fewer "entities" reimbursing themselves for "direct and indirect" expenses, (as stated in the proposed changes), out of this fund, the more resources will be available to assist needy veterans and their families.
