    Hmmm.

Does this sound like the first step toward a law like they have in China? Does Rep. Chase eventually want us to have to get permision from the state to reproduce?

    Not a good idea

This is not a good idea! It is a waste of taxpayer dollars! Why should the state get involved in people's private matters like this? Why does the state think it knows how many kids couples should have? There are plenty of non-profit organizations promoting what they think. This is not one of the purposes of government!

    It would solve one problem

    Traffic!!!

Let me spell it for them.

    T-R-A-F-F-I-C

Come on Olympia. We elect you take care of issues, not create stupid ways to waste money. And this is stupid!

    Terrible

Absolutely heinous! Who does this pompous bureaucrat think she is? This is exactly the kind of inclination that we need to curb immediately--it is none of the government's business how many children I want to have!

    Pied Piper

Looks like Representative Chase is looking to Communist China with its forced limitation of two children per couple for inspiration in developing her model for population control.
First comes the indoctrination and next comes the mandatory implementation.
Like the Pied Piper she seeks to lead our youth astray.

US citizens should have more children.

Until I would think that the bigger problem of over population and a drain on social and environmental resources would be from illegal imigration than the repoductive habits of Americans. In fact I thought the reproductive rates in the US were under two- meaning we are losing ground. What a waste of money. More money for the illegals.

    Limiting offspring?

Now maybe if it's within a Democrat household, that may be a good idea, they already produce far too many dependents upon society. There's probably a good amount of data to support that most recipients of welfare, food stamps, and prison 'room and board' are beholden to the Democrat party.

    Just another control issue

I wonder why when we the voters send a person to Olympia they suddenly get the idea that we wish them to contol every facet of our existance. POWER. By controling what others can do they aquire a sence of power. When I vote I do not want you to tell me how many kids I should have, what I should drive, where I should work, or where I can go. I want you to solve the traffic issue, to restrict you interfernce in our lives, to allow businsses to function freely with out overbearing regulations. I voted you into office to fix problems not to impose your beliefs onto my lifestyle. I DO know what is best for me.

    WA Birth rate is DECREASING!

    From http://www.doh.wa.gov/Publicat/2003_News/03-198.htm:

The birth rate in WA decreased to 13.1 births per 1000 population - the lowest birth rate since 1993.

More startling is the percentage of mothers who are unmarried (29% of all births) has increased almost tenfold since 1960. THAT, my fellow Washingtonians, is our problem!

How about a pamphlet that encourages women to not have children out of wedlock? The current feminist mantra of "no man needed here" is harming children and our society's future and yet our government won't dare speak out about it.

Heck, maybe we should just all keep quiet. It might put the majority of psychiatric therapists out of work 20 years or so down the road because our children would have matured in a nurturing conventional family atmosphere where both a man and a woman worked together to ensure the care and well being of their children. Without a future crop of victims, who will our government step in and rescue?

Oh? Are we living in China now?

Washington is just so over-populated, isn't it? Has this idiot left her snug upper-crust neighborhood recently? Taken a trip outside the Seattle metropolitan area? She must have, being in Olympia for at least some of the year, driven through vast tracts of undeveloped land.

Just exactly where do these people get the idea that they have any right to even consider introduction of such a bill? thanks again for wasting the money that they are extracting from our wallets.

I say we pass an initiative limiting these idiots to 2 days of sessions a year. It would cost us a hell of a lot less in taxes and our freedoms.

    More Children

Children are a great blessing. We have four - and wish we had more. By the way, my husband has two Masters degrees and I have one. We are well educated - certainly we have enough education to understand that there is more to life than careers or "toys".

    Get her out of office.

All part of the plan people. Lower the population of natural born citizens, flood in illegal invaders while outsourcing white collar jobs overseas.

Result? A peasant class ruled by an elitist class.

Someone dig up Mao they miss him in Olympia.
  • 01-31-2004 9:56 PM In reply to

We don't want gov't to enter into that issue. Some people should have more, some should have none.......It all evens out!
  • 02-01-2004 3:23 PM In reply to

    Are you kidding me?

Why do people support this, get this elitist democrat out of office. My wife and I have 2 boys and will be going for a third (hopefully daddy's little girl), who is Rep. Maralyn Chase or any other government official to tell me what's good for my family? I can't believe this, it's disgusting, if you want this kind of government to rule your life move to China! Here's a link to an article about "Breeders", as the Left refers to us, that just shows that Washington isn't the only place this is thought.

    Does she hate America?

this policy to limit the number of children couples can have is family-planning policy from China, a communist nation. We are a free republic, which means freedom to choose on this issue. Rep. Chase is sorely mislead on this one.
  • 02-04-2004 1:44 PM In reply to

She voted to give illegals in-state tuition rates!

She wants to limit how many children US CITIZENS can have, but she is happy to give ILLEGAL immigrants in-state residency status when they go to college here in WA.
She is treating ILLEGAL immigrants better than she is treating US citizens.
Which one of our three kids am I not supposed to have?
  • 02-04-2004 1:47 PM In reply to

    Is she a MOM?

I have to seriously wonder how many kids she has and if she doesn't have any its no wonder since she so wants to dictate what a couple can do in their own bedroom. Can't wait to hear what the Catholic Church will have to say about this one!!!!

    Tyrany

The Soviet Republic, Communist China --
hey - soon there will be no difference between our country and the most tyrannical countries in the world ..
try to take away religion -
tell people how many children they can have ...
i think anyone who would come up with a bill like this should be quickly removed from office.

    The Woman Doesn't Like Children?

Obviously the woman doesn't like children. Rather than create a pamphlet telling responsible adults to reduce the number of children, why not make a pamphlet promoting abstinence among teens. This is where birth control needs to start. She just might get the reverse affect and have a population explosion just to spite her!

Too bad her parents didn't stop having children before she was born. We live in the United States, not China, and I do not like the road she proposes to lead us down.

We are expecting our second child and if we choose to have more it's our business, not the government's.

I thought it was a joke

When I first read the headline for this story, I thought it must be a joke. How outrageous! I have FIVE children, and if I could afford to raise more I would have more! However, as a responsible American, and parent, I, along with my husband, determined how many children we could support. I understand that there are many irresponsible adults who have children without giving any thought to how they will be taken care of, or assuming the government will provide, but, lets face it, most of those pregnancies weren't planned, and therefor, this kind of government action would have no affect on those people.

This is one of the most absurd ideas I have heard of in a long time.

  • 02-07-2004 8:10 AM In reply to

    Good Idea!!

Our main problems in society today can be traced to overpopulation. It's clear that the entire world is becoming too crowded, and an individual person's worth is devalued because...there are so many others. Why do we barely roll our eyes when we hear of 225 people killed in a mob crush in the Hajj? Or we increasing become immune to a natural disaster that kills thousands in South America or China? In the United States, we are so spoiled and degraded that we take the majority of the world's resources and spew the largest of the pollutants, just to keep our "quality of life" standards and move forward on the peaking capitalist wave that, when it finally crests and then crashes, will bring suffering to our population...and there are those who think we will deserve it.
We should really start looking ahead of our measly 60 years (or less) of worthwhile lifespans and think of generations to come, and try to prepare for the future, not just wallow in our own abundance and good fortune in this 'good times' period of History. Thousands of years from now, will our descendants look back at us as plunderers and decadent, tribal, spoiled self-admirers who left nothing but waste and junk for their heirs? Or should we care, since our 401-k's will be all that we need when we retire, and who cares because after we die, we won't be around to worry about life thousand of years from now. Don't be short-sighted. Start somewhere, support this bill, and THink AHead.

    Incrimentalism

Once again librals prove they are only pro-choice until a child is born. This nut and people who support this bill are the very definition of a life style fascist. That being a person who believes the government should decide how we live and the choices we make every day. Washington and Oregon governments already exert a heavy hand in deciding where people can live. It is not a big step to control how people live.
And these whackos call conservatives fascists? Who is fooling who?
  • 02-07-2004 8:48 AM In reply to

    confused

I believe the author of this response has confused population with consumption. Look around you and consider who it is that is gobbling up all the resources to support their quality of life. Does it tend to be the busy families caring for their many organic children? Or the people, unfettered by familial responsibilities, rife with disposable income, clawing for the next thrill (in possessions or experiences) to finally procure that elusive satisfaction, which really comes from being a responsible part of a community, a family?
  • 02-07-2004 9:08 AM In reply to

    Think much?

Who do you think will be paying our social security lady? The more children I have, the more money in your pocket and the retired citizen through the welfare system called social security. How on earth did you get into office? Not much of a thinker are you?
  • 02-07-2004 9:09 AM In reply to

    Here Comes The Slippery Slope.

First they'll be SUGGESTING it in State Legislature. Then they'll be sanctioning large families. Then they'll be ENFORCING an offical two-child policy by law (or at least ATTEMPTING to enforce it -- we know from China that they can't stop everybody). Then it'll move to the national level, if it hasn't already. Don't be fooled: This is a evil, wolf-in-sheep's-clothing move to start eroding away at our most basic personal freedoms.

Here's a news flash to Representative Chase: America possesses not only separation of church and state, but Freedom of Religion. It is our CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT. And many religions either frown upon or outright condemn the use of birth control (such as Catholics and Mormons, two of the largest religious organizations in United States). How dare she even suggest to compromise and go against our religious (not to mention personal) beliefs in order to appease Big Government? Apparently she seems to think the government knows better than we do when it comes to creating the miracle of life. What a hideous thought!

If anything, Americans need to have MORE children. Compared to some other developed countries, we're a dying breed....

Which one of my 3 should I "get rid of"...

What GALL.... I cannot imagine ANYONE born in America even considering limiting the amount of children a person has. Can you imagine what would be next? I guess if this horrible example of American politics gets her way, then we may not be allowed to have more than one animal... I guess my goldfish should go... What has happend to the democratic party...UGH!!
  • 02-07-2004 9:30 AM In reply to

    want sustainability? change consumer habits

This is very frightening to me. What needs to change is not the number of children but our wasteful habits. If people lived simply the population number would not be an issue. It is that we have become dependant on many material goods that leave behind much waste and pollution.

What maralyn proposes will lead to unhappiness. It will encourage abortion and other negative things that will lead to an unhappy society.

There is nothing more lovely that a large family! Society benefits from full families!
