2011 Senate Bill 5846: Offering health benefit subsidies for certain retired public employees
  1. Introduced by Sen. Lisa Brown, (D-Spokane) (D) on February 22, 2011, to require the state health care authority to provide an optional subsidy of two hundred fifty dollars per month for health benefit premiums to certain members of the teachers' retirement system.

      • Substitute offered in the Senate on April 15, 2011, to provide that the prohibition on the post-retirement employment in excess of 867 hours peryear for a retiree receiving the $250 per month subsidy applies while the member is receiving the subsidy rather than until the end of the subsidy program. The restrictions on postretirementemployment are placed in the chapter of RCW governing TRS rather than in the chapter governing employee health benefits.

  2. Passed 28 to 16 in the Senate on May 20, 2011, to provide that from September 1, 2011, through August 31, 2014, a subsidyof $250 per month is available for health benefits for retired members of TRS 1 who are ineligible for Medicare. In order to receive the subsidy, a member must apply for retirement between June 1, 2011, and August 31, 2011, and receive the first installment of a TRS 1 retirement allowance by October 31, 2011. A member who is receiving the $250 per month subsidy may not work more than 867 hours per year in a retirement-system covered position.

 I am sure that since no public employees are named i.e. police, firefighters, etc, Lisa Brown just wants to feather her own retirement along with other lawmakers and this is the way to do it.

Apparently Lisa Brown in not satisfied by the rate at which this State is going broke...she has to find a way to speed up the process!
