I am opposed to the state adopting this measure which would allow service animals in training to have public access. I am a person with a disability, a wheelchair user and I now have my third service dog. I am not a trainer and my service dogs have been provided to me by programs. I cannot tell you how many times my natural right to access has been interrupted or deterred by a person bringing their pet, wearing a vest with a patch yet totally untrained into an establishment claiming it was a service dog in training. This legislation is an open door to individuals who are thinking only of themselves and their pet and ultimately violate the rights of people with disabilities. There are numerous sites (blogs) where individuals talk about simply telling a store owner that their pet dog is a service dog so that they can take their dog with them wherever they go. If the state pursues this action, the state will ultimately be complicit in undermining my civil rights as a person with a disability who uses an assistance dog.
