2008 House Bill 2818 (duties of the waste reduction and sustainable production department within Ecology)

  • Introduced by Rep. Tom Campbell, (R-Roy) on January 16, 2008, to support the goal of reduction of fifty percent of hazardous materials in the state by 2020. This act adopts this policy goal and provides guidelines through various programs of waste and chemical reduction to assist in reaching the stated goal. Among other things, this act requires, continued measurement of goals and programs towards the obtaining the state goal.

      • Substitute offered in the House on January 30, 2008, to add the requirement for the OWRSP to consult with the DOH on the health effects of toxic chemicals and safer chemical alternatives; provides for evaluation of funding for programs to help meet the 50 percent toxic chemicals use reduction goal by 2020; removes "critical materials" from the definition of "toxic chemicals;" requires the OWRSP to establish and maintain a database of chemicals to help meet the 2020 toxic chemicals use reduction goal; removes the requirement to develop a toxic chemicals registry of critical material; removes the reference to a safer chemical alternatives advisory committee; and removes the requirement for companies to provide toxicity data on their chemicals and products to the DOE.

Dan Newhouse, (R-Sunnyside) on February 19, 2008, removing chemicals used in agricultural production from consideration for use reduction by the office of waste reduction and sustainable production.
