2005 House Bill 1494: Health care services for school children

To require that beginning with the 2006-7 school year, every school will have a ratio of at least one school nurse for every two thousand students. By the 2008 school year that ratio will change to one nurse for every one thousand five hundred students.   Official Text and Analysis.

To include the requirement that the office of superintendent of public instruction work in collaboration with the department of health in the development of a work group to study school nursing services in class I school districts. It specifies that the work group will make recommendations for a school nurse- to-student ratio for various grade levels. It also creates a school nurse account to increase the school nurse-to-student ratio in class I school districts. It removes the appropriation. (BELO 003).

To require the work group to study the prevalence of chronic diseases and life threatening conditions among students in class I school districts. IT removes the requirement that the work group study or make recommendations on school nurse-to-student ratios. It requires school nurse account expenditures to go towards providing appropriate school nursing services for students with chronic diseases and life threatening conditions. (BELO 007).
