  • Introduced by Sen. Jim Honeyford, (R-Sunnyside) on January 29, 2003, to repeal the prohibition on sale of liquor on University of Washington grounds. This bill is by request of the University of Washington. See also Companion HB 1647.
    • Referred to the Senate Commerce and Trade Committee on January 30, 2003.
      • Testimony in support offered to the Senate Commerce and Trade Committee on February 14, 2003, by Dennis Martynouyeh, UW Burke Museum; and Amy Bell, UW. They testified that the Burke Museum would like to be able to have a no-host bar at its events. Currently, the museum can give away wine at events. Having a no-host bar would allow the Burke to recover more of its costs. The Burke would still need to get a permission from the University to serve wine, and would also need to get a permit from the Liquor Control Board. UW is the only university in the state with such a prohibition in law.
        Testimony against: none offered.
    • Referred to the Senate Rules Committee on February 17, 2003.
    • Amendment offered by Sen. Linda Evans Parlette, (R-Wenatchee) on March 7, 2003, to encourage institutions of higher education, that choose to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages on campus, to feature products produced in the state of Washington. The amendment passed in the Senate by voice vote on March 7, 2003.
  • Passed in the Senate (41 to 8) on March 7, 2003, to repeal the prohibition on sale of liquor on University of Washington grounds. [Vote Details and Comments]
