"Really? This has got to be one the most ridiculous wastes of time in the history of water. SO so sad. Our legislature is clearly bored. I can just picture the "water bottle" black market. There will be special rooms in the back of gas stations that you sneak into to get a bottle of water. Its like water prohibition."

Plastics impact [by Anonymous Citizen on September 4, 2008]
about 2008 House Bill 2422 (Prohibiting the sale of petroleum-based water bottles)
Yes, glass and aluminum have a high energy cost for production. We are working on utilizing greener technologies for energy production.
Please research the impacts of plastic and PVC manufacturing plants on the workers who are exposed to these chemicals on a daily basis. And the communities around them, and the communities down wind. The documentary "Blue Vinyl", directed by Daniel B. Gold and Judith Helfand, covers the history and life-cycle of PVC.

Please also research the "North Pacific Gyre" aka the "Garbage Patch". This is a plastic soup twice the size of Texas that has accumulated plastic trash from around the world. Plastic never goes away. It breaks down into microscopic particles. Plankton feeders consume these. Tests have shown that there are 6 times more plastic than plankton in the "Garbage Patch". Small fish consume these particles mistaking them for food, then larger fish eat those fish, and then we consume those fish. The chemicals in plastics cause cancer, birth defects, sterilization to humans. Birds eat larger pieces of plastic mistaking it for safe food and then die of suffocation, etc.
Please think again about the real impacts plastic has made on us and our world.

Randy's Law [by Anonymous Citizen on September 1, 2008]
about 2008 House Bill 2868 (modify the definition of relative for the purpose of rendering criminal assistance)
It was a sad day when I learned that the adult children of Randy's murderer would not be held accountable for their participation in the senseless, premeditated death of an innocent man. I never would have thought that anyone could be given a slap on the wrist after being involved with and covering up a murder simply because of their relation to the murderer. At what age are children required to take responsibility for their actions? In all other aspects of the law children become responsible for their actions at age 18, but not when involved in a murder as long as the murderer is your mother. What kind of message is this sending? Unfortunately, it is too late for the Ferguson family to get the justice that Randy Ferguson deserved, but it is not too late for other families like them who will have to go through this heartache in the future. Please pass this law and send a new message, the right message. No matter the relation, being involved in a murder will be punishable with the full extent of the law. Josie Nordyke

RANDY'S LAW [by Anonymous Citizen on August 27, 2008]
about 2008 House Bill 2868 (modify the definition of relative for the purpose of rendering criminal assistance)
My name is Laura Bailey. I am Randy's oldest sister. Words can never truly express how this law has burdened our family. How do you explain to your children that their uncles adult "step-children" who knew of their mothers plans to have him murdered, never came forward. Plus when she did commit the crime they assisted her in the cover up and are now free to walk among us while we go about our daily life. ALL adults must be accountable for their actions!! We must send a message so no one ever will have to experience what our family and families before us have had to go through. Please pass Randy's Law, it is the right thing to do. This is for you, Randy. Love,
your big sis.

I was surprised when learning of
the existance of such a law. I am a
sister-in-law of one of Randy's
sisters. I only met Randy once or
twice but have seen the damage this
senseless crime did to his family.
All adults are responsible for their
actions and their relationship to the victim and
they must be accountible for their
actions. Why should someone be allow-
to go free when their sister lives the
rest of her life wondering why this
terrible crime was committed against
her Dad and they helped in his death.
Thank you for your consideration in
changing this law so that there will
be "justice for all."

Please pass this law. Protection of adults because they assisted a parent in committing a crime is just wrong. Adults should be responsible for their own behavior. If they are influenced or coerced by a parent, their responsibility is not diminished. I have seen the pain that my brother's wife and her family have suffered due to her brother's murder. To see Randy's step children go unpunished just adds to their pain. Kathy Evans (sister-in-law to Randy's sister)

"RANDY'S LAW" [by Anonymous Citizen on August 25, 2008]
about 2008 House Bill 2868 (modify the definition of relative for the purpose of rendering criminal assistance)
I believe in JUSTICE being served. If you commit a crime you deserve to get full punishment regardless of your relationship to the victim or others committing the crime. If you are a minor under the age of 18 and were cohersed into committing a crime then yes you should be protected by the House Bill 2868 "Randy's Law"! Every adult (age 18) needs to be held responsible for their own actions. If commit you pay!!! All children know how to say No for everything else in life; so being cohersed into a crime can easily be walked away from helping commit. Those adult children need to be punished just like their mother for committing a brutal crime such as aiding in the killing of their step father. Please honor HB 2868 "Randy's LAW" so others do not have to grieve like the Ferguson Family. Thank you!!! Michelle Hamilton

As a citizen I want our courts and legislators to know that we are standing behind this law. We are standing for justice and truth. A family of five who believes in our court system and believes that G-d has all things in His hands, but we as people need to stand with justice to know that justice is served to those who deserve it. Thou shall not commit murder is one of the foundational laws of hummanity. Every person of age knows from the bottom of their being that it is wrong to murder. Everyone should be held accountable for their actions. G-d will serve justice from heaven, but we should serve justice from the earth.

about 2008 House Bill 2868 (modify the definition of relative for the purpose of rendering criminal assistance)
I think that if somebody who commits a crime over the age of 18 should be held accountable for their actions. These are two competent adults who should have had their day in court. It should not matter if they were related or not. These two individuals knew what their mother did was wrong and not only did they help her but they lied to police to cover it up. If we allow such an injustice to continue what kind of precedence are we setting for the youth in this state? This is a loophole that needs to be fixed. I urge you to right this wrong so future families will not have to suffer the indignity that the Ferguson family has had to face. (Chris Martin)

We are friends of the family and have seen the pain in the eyes of Randy's mother and father. Parents always think their children will never die before them. Sometimes, there is no choice because of illness. This however was an act of hate that took their son from them. Randy's wife was the one with so much hate she convinced her adult children to help her. She has been held accountable for his death but her grown children have not been held accountable for their part in the murder of Randy. The law states because they were the children of the murderer they cannot be held liable for their part. How foolish is this law!! If they helped a stranger they would be accomplices but not if they help their parent. This is "outragious"!! Randy is gone but in his name he can still help others. Please pass Randy's Law.

How could this be a step in the right direction? Making it illegal to own firearms will not do our state or country any good. It is far more easy to obtain an illegal firearm than to get one legally. And for the most part people who are buying them legally do not intend to use them illegally. the criminals in our society will get them one way or another and i for one enjoy the right to defend myself against those who may want to hurt me or god forbid my family.

Randys Law [by Anonymous Citizen on August 21, 2008]
about 2008 House Bill 2868 (modify the definition of relative for the purpose of rendering criminal assistance)

My name is Paul Dunsford and my wife Florence joins me in this comment relative to HB 2868 "Randy's Law.

We live in Michigan and Randy Ferguson was our nephew. It is most difficult to explain here the
depth of agony we have experienced in watching our Washington (Puyallup) family struggle in the loss of their son, brother, uncle and most of all father to his 4 year old daughter. Randy was brutally murdered by his wife with the assistance of her two adult age children with the result being the children could not be prosecuted due to their relationship with their murdering mother. We plead with our family for the passing of HB2868
to include persons under the age of 18 to be held equally responsible when a horrific crime such as this is committed.

Please pass this bill in memory of our beloved Randy.

Thank you,

Paul & Florence Dunsford

about 2008 House Bill 3104 (Expanding rights and responsibilities for domestic partnerships)
i can tell when someone is angry by the way they use capital letters and exclamation points.
it is best to write/type after you calm a bit, so when you respond it is kind, well-thought out, and civil.
that goes for all sides.
now, if you do not know someone, please do not call them a bigot.
i do not know the person you called that, but there is a very good chance that they are not.
big·ot:Origin: 1590–1600,derogatory name applied by the French to the Normans!
interesting to search the actual definitions of words so popular today to insite attacks and rage, isn't it?
also, if you hope to make your point get across to a person who holds already a strong view in opposition to your own, it does not aid you at all to lower yourself to name-calling, right?
right or wrong, an angry aggressive person appears wrong.
let's debate instead!
by the way, it is indeed possible to not approuve of a behavior or action, and still care about and respect the person who does the act.

My husband and I decided to go to the beach for the weekend 8/9/08 and took the Edmonds Ferry. When we turned a corner there were cars backed up on the right, in line for the ferry. Since we didn't want to rear-end the car in front of us we immediately got into the left lane. I told my husband (both of us unaware "ferry etiquite") "Maybe someone will let you in." The line started to move and we got once again into the right lane. Minutes later not one but two pepole rapped my window irate at us for "cutting in line." We then got out of line and made a u-turn and went to the back of the line. We eventually ended up on the same ferry as the people who were ticked off at us. We had no mal intent of saving time we only wanted to get in line. We appologize for upsetting anyone and won't do it again!

and I want my dog to have the same rights as a spouse would have.

Do ya think that in maybe 10 years the insanity that we are living under in 2008 will have abated and we can get back to normal?

Meaning, when are we going to start caring about the lives and futures of children rather than basing our entire world view on adult sexual preferences?

Kids need a mother and a father and not two homosexuals pretending to be normal people or a man and a woman who have a child out of wedlock and then have multiple partners coming and going out of the house.

Randys Law [by ljmoore65 on August 10, 2008]
about 2008 House Bill 2868 (modify the definition of relative for the purpose of rendering criminal assistance)
My name is Lisa Moore I am the sister of Randall Ferguson who was murdered over two years ago. I am the one fighting to have this bill passed. My brothers wife killed him and was sentenced to 27 years and her two adult children were involved in rendering criminal assistance and because of the way this law is written they received no jail or prison time. I believe this is wrong. The way the law is written it says the children were influenced by the mother there for they are not held accountable. There is no age limit on this law and I want to put an age limit of 18. These children were 19 and 21 years old and if it was anyone else not a relative we would be looking at several years in prison. It should not matter if you are related to the killer. Hold them accountable. I am raising my brothers only little girl whom was in the house at the time of the murder.
She dosent understand why they are not in jail too. They should be. She was 4 years old at the time. What are we saying that if your mother murders and you assist her its ok because she was your mother? At age 18 you vote, you drive a car you can fight in a war and in any other crime you would be held accountable. This law needs to be passed. One of the children helped stuff my brothers 280 pound body in the trunk of a car and they both destroyed evidence and lied to the police for 6 days. They helped clean a murder scene and just did things that should be punishable by the law. To know that they are just walking in the world not being held responsible for there part is an additional pain to have to deal with. I cant be the only one to think this is wrong and I knew nothing about this law until my brother was murdered. I dont think many if anyone knows about this law. Thank you Randall Fergusons sister Lisa Moore.

I think we're missing her point. Rep. Chase has proposed a ban starting in 2010. That gives the manufacturers several years to come up with another option- corn-based for example. Unfortunately people are too lazy to recycle all their bottles- take one look at the garage cans at the stadium after a game. Eight out of 10 plastic water bottles become landfill waste (earth911.org). Next it might be Styrofoam- which we should be avoiding like the plaque. American is *quite* behind in getting green. Moves like this are actually overdue! Kudos Rep. Chase!

It may sound petty, but why are we required to spend money on stamps to send in our ballots? alternate perspective [by Anonymous Citizen on July 31, 2008]
about 2008 House Bill 2422 (Prohibiting the sale of petroleum-based water bottles)
Speaking of ignorance on the part of public and politicians, I would like to offer a food for thought to balance the views. Plastic bottles and packages, as far as I understand it technically, have been actually saving energy and friendlier to the landfills compared to alternative packaging which they replace. Glass and aluminum bottles, for example, have much higher impact on the use of energy and landfills. Can you melt plastic with a match? Try doing that on glass. I cannot think of a single alternative packaging which presents less impact on environment than plastics. The corn based bottles have a potential once the technology gets perfected.. i.e. reliable shelf life, etc. The real focus should be education on recycling. Banning something because it is easy to do politically often has the opposite effect in real life. This type of short-sightedness is unfortunate part of our political thinking process.

Wrong! [by Anonymous Citizen on July 31, 2008]
about 2006 Senate Bill 6613 (Banning internet gambling)
That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. If somebody lacks self-control, and will gamble too much; making them drive for four hours won't curtail it much. By waiting they'll just build up the anticipation and spend too much when they get there. Besides, if you had ever visited an online casino you'd know that they have, especially Poker, micro-stakes. With these players only wager a few cents or a dollar at a time. In real casinos you might pay a minimum of $10 to $20 just to get into a hand! So, in conclusion, I think you have shown very little understanding of this subject by commending this law. If you had just banged on a Bible and said "Gambling goes against God's word, and therefore is wrong!" I would have agreed more with that opinion more than the one you gave.

How much resouces, food, energy, etc it takes to sustain this population and factor in all the garbage and toxic waste the entire world produces and tries to either bury in the ground where it gets into the water table, toxic fumes in the air we breath, and in the ocean kiloing the sea life or poosioning what we eat.

Does it make sense to dump waste in your living room> That's what we all do everyday.

It is the greatest scam and con game ever played by any government to regulate all commerce and hoodwink the people into higher taxes, more restrictive laws, and ultimately, slavery.

Google "31,000 Scientists warming"

If you think I'm just one of those right wing sticks in the mud, go ahead, bury your head in the sand and follow the rest of the lemmings over the cliff. Again, I say...just type "31,000 scientists warming" into your google search engine and you will quickly see why I and others who can see past Al Gore and all his bulls**t simply refuse to play dead and let the government enslave us and our economy.

Al Gore does not matter [by Anonymous Citizen on July 23, 2008]
about 2008 House Bill 2420 (Establishing a carbon tax.)
What some one else does should have no effect on your own ethics... Al Gore may or may not walk the walk. It does not matter. Even if he uses hyperbole in his message it does not matter. All politicians exagerate one way or the other. Try Bush with the gitmo treatment. Does not change the fact that there may be some truth to the success of "modified interogation" or whatever. We just do not know the facts on that debate. However...

www.ipcc.ch

There is a majority consensus about climate change in the scientific community. Harvard has signed onto emmission reductions because they see an imminent threat. Even if global warming is not a "fact" it is statistically a strong possibility. The planet is not something to just mess with on ifs and maybes. If there is chance, just a chance, we are screwing our children out of a decent habitat, we should change our ways.

The extra trouble to remove the law would be more effective.
All laws are imposing, to make a new one to remove an old one may be easier, but still allows it to even be changed.
It is correctly stated that the new law would remove aquiring a permit to collect rain water, however, it is a new law and subject to change. Take the extra time, the extra effort, the extra work, the extra whatever, and just remove the old law.
The easy way out. How sad.

Has this been enacted? I live at Indian Springs Village in Vancouver, WA. We currently have a dispute over a special assessment. The HOA board of directors (of which I am a current member) has decided to fight with homeowner members that dispute the validity of the special assessment approval. The board knows that many of our older residents cannot afford to fight so they are moving forward in saying that the vote for the special assessment passed. Is there a way to help these people in their argument? I personally feel the vote for it is invalid.

Money Back to the Economy? Huh?? [by Anonymous Citizen on July 14, 2008]

"You're already putting the $200 into the local economy, but spending it on gas and parking. So the local economy would most likly be losing money, as you'd probably see to save some of that for vacation or spending outside the region.

I'm all for lane sharring, but just pointing out the hole in your argument. "

Oh, come on... Think it *all* the way through - the $100 a month isn't lost to the parking attendant, someone else will (gladly) take the spot and pay it - not like there's a surplus of parking downtown is there?. The other $100 not spent on gas a month, even if spent "outside the region" will probably still go to someone in the State, or at least the US, not OPEC. And if that vacation is on the motorcycle, at 50 MPG, it could well end up being widely spent in the state or US..

See ya on the road.. probably in my rear-views...

Safety - MC and Auto [by Anonymous Citizen on July 14, 2008]
about 2005 House Bill 1176 (Allowing motorcycles between lanes during congestion)
Having grown up and learning to drive (and ride) in California, I have a little experience on the topic of lane-splitting I can share..

First the joke "if you can't do 70mph bumper-to-bumper you got no business on the freeway" is not really a joke. A motorcycle sandwiched between two cars is ugly at any speed, but the problem is the one behind suddenly going significantly faster than the one in front.

Lane splitting isn't about reducing commute time, it's about safety. CHP statistics have shown for years their motorcycles were involved in fewer accidents, and those accidents were less severe, if they were "lane splitting" rather than riding in the lanes. My own experience echo's that.. I've been hit from behind in traffic by folks not paying attention, where the only altercation I ever had in between the lanes was by some fortunate fool trying to take me out. (I say "fortunate fool", as the third bike behind me in the line was a CHP motorcycle officer, the fool part was his window was down and I ended up halfway in his car ready to break his neck, I say fortunate because the officer stopped me from killing him and instead arrested *him* for attempted vehicular homicide.. he got off light considering)

Given that there's a whole lot more "cage" drivers out there totally oblivious to other vehicles around them (never mind motorcycles) my odds are much worse with them behind me in a lane (and we didn't have cell phones and ipods back then!) than up ahead crawling along in traffic.

I learned to ride bikes by riding in the dirt. I learned about people by riding bikes in traffic. I learned there is no such thing as an unavoidable accident on a motorcycle, and after 40 years riding I can honestly say I know what the people ahead are going to do often before they do.. rule #1 on motorcycles is never be surprised.. I expect people to turn in front of me, open their doors on side streets, run red lights.. I always leave plenty of escape-room ahead at a stop and have both eyes locked on the car coming up behind me.. I've driven out of 3 rear-end accidents that way (they still happened, I just wasn't in the middle of it - I escaped IN BETWEEN THE LANES!).

While lane-splitting, you've got one eye on the rear-view mirrors of drivers ahead, looking for that glance, the quick head-turn.. I can see what's behind them and their opportunities in the flow of traffic much better than they can - I know if (s)he is looking to bolt to the next lane, has room to speed up, is drifting left or right.. and can adjust accordingly.

I can't do squat about the knucklehead behind me checking the next lane for clearance or wiping up the latte (s)he just spilled on her faux-leather seat and oblivious that the traffic ahead is stopping, who never even sees that motorcycle disappearing under his or her hood ornament.

I'd also like to avoid the "unsafe driving" and "following too close" tickets I got two years ago when I had to jump between the lanes getting off I-90 in Issaquah to avoid being the meat in a motorcycle sandwich developing as traffic rapidly accordianed back up onto the freeway.
Not gonna argue with the young WSP officer over what was safer to do and what he thought he saw from a mile back or why being forced to stay in the lane caused the "following too close" in the first place. Cheaper to just pay the stupid things than what it would have cost me in lost wages fighting it. First ticket on a motorcycle for me since 1974.

Shorter commute time? Not the issue. Better gas milage on a motorcycle? That's not a factor really, although stopped in traffic, everybody's gas milage is 0 mpg, motorcycles included.

It's safety. Contrary to gut feelings, lane-splitting is safer.

Motorcyclists: it's spooky when you first start doing this, and you better have more than just 3 months (maybe even a couple years) experience riding your bike before you do this even if it becomes legal, because it demands control, judgement and attentiveness that you don't get just putting around on weekends. You need to be "zen" with the traffic flow.

Cage drivers: Don't be freaking out with that motorcycle coming up along side you, and don't complain about them passing you while you're stuck in traffic. The last thing you want is my Harley sitting along side you for any period of time in traffic.. you won't be able to hear the person you're talking to on the cell phone. Just let me go.. it's just your choice and my choice and there's no conflict.

"Steeley"

about 2007 Senate Bill 5071 (Concerning visitation rights for grandparents.)
Most grandparents are as you say.
But then there are some that are not. There are some that use the system to file false charges against the parent ending up in the children being put in foster care even after the parent went out of the way for the grandmother to see the children.
The Parent had to file contempt of court charges to get them returned just to have the grandmother file more abuse charges. Does a caring grandparent subject the child to what needs to be accomplished to file an abuse charge?
By the way the parent was found not guilty of the charges....
Now the grandparent still pushes in court battles.
Most all parents want the child to have a relationship with grandparents.
But if the parent who is a fit parent and was proven so feels that their children are in danger THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE VISITATION!!

I have been fingerprinted, background checked, measured, interviewd and checked for diseases to find even the tiniest issue with my character in order to achieve my permanent residency - in short I'm as upstanding a person as you're likely to meet and I'll be applying for citizenship in a few years when I qualify, at which point I shall pursue a place on the US Olympic shooting team. With any sense of legal decency the law will be struck down after today's ruling by the Supreme Court - permanent residents have constitutional rights unless federal law explicitly excludes them from a specific clause.

I believe that grandchildren are often used as the pawns in a concerted effort to wield power and control over grandparents by emotionally immature parents. In most cases, children are being denied the right to visit a grandparent not out of love or concern for the child, but out of vindictiveness by a parent. Grandparents are an important and integral part of the social and emotional fabric of a child's life and if need be, should be protected by law.

There are so many good reasons why this law helps society. If people are going to gamble they will gamble, even in Utah (where casinos and gambling is illegal) people drive a few hours sometimes every weekend to gamble in Wendover Nevada. I have never heard of anyone complaining of the casino being so far away because the majority of people that go don't come back with more money than when they started. The reason why this law is so commendable is because it helps reduce the temptation of gambling more often than usual. There are plenty of benefits to having access to the internet, having a personal casino is not one of them.

How bout THIS carbon footprint? [by pjones on June 12, 2008]
about 2008 House Bill 2815 (greenhouse gas emissions and green collar jobs)
Come on now. In the 1970’s the earth was on the verge of a “Global Ice age” and swarms of ‘knowledgeable’ scientists, some who are still pontificating today on the warming craze, flocked to agree and predict the frozen demise of the earth and all because of mankind and our negative impact on the environment. Just as quick to swarm, were the politicians with their incessant drooling and endeavors to get their hands deeper in our pockets with tax after tax all touted to be able to correct man’s impact on the weather.

Then comes your Global Warming idiocy; and this time, our Carbon Footprint is to blame. Isn’t it interesting how every time, it’s the big brother government who offers the path to salvation, all for a ‘miniscule’ increase in taxes, regulations, and restrictions on the capital market. Lots of money to be made on this, (and the next) ‘taxable’ calamity they can brain wash you and your ilk into believing is caused by whatever. Even more money to be made by scaring the wits out of fools like you so you can dig your hand deeper into your pockets and dole out more tax money to fix another ‘scary’ problem that the almighty government promises to fix by coming to the rescue with taxes. What are they going to buy with that money? Why carbon credits of course! Then they can strike a bargain with ole mother nature, Satan, or whoever else pops up with a promise of salvation from the looming, man-made weather disaster.

The saddest point here, is that the vast hordes of sheep falling onto the bandwagon of Greenhouse gases and carbon footprints don’t even realize just how stooopid they sound. Bend over fool, I’ll give you a carbon footprint right in your “posterior rumpus endus” where you store your brain!

Notice now, how the story changes as science figures out that the world isn’t actually warming. Now, “Global Warming” has morphed into “Climate Change”…The next politically correct buzzword to frighten the witless out of more tax money.

There is just one other problem. Although it's obvious that thousands of scientists from multiple disciplines throughout the world couldn't be wrong, it now seems that they are. This is not the rant of some oil industry paid-for study, but the admission by none other than Rajendra Pachauri, the head of the IPCC, which represents over 2,500 environmental and climatological scientists.

It seems that, sadly, facts are stubborn little things that won't go away, and scientific measurement is far more accurate than man-made computer projections and theories.

The problem began with a long awaited set of studies of precise global ocean temperatures made by over 3000 buoys, combined with atmospheric measurements from no less than 8 orbiting NASA satellites. Our expectation was that this would really end the debate. The discussion would simply debate "just how bad is it?". It didn't turn out that way.

All of the instrumentation said the opposite. Global warming had inexplicably stopped, and the earth has been cooling slightly since the late 1990's and will continue to do so for at least the next 10 to 15 years. Impossible, you say? Well it seems that global warming researchers, while taken aback at the data, are still scientists. And scientists, while sometimes led astray, tend to stick with science, not political correctness or popular opinion.

That's the reason why the conclusions were not found by NASA or the Bush administration, by Exxon or by anti-global-warming forces, but by climate scientists themselves. A team led by none other than uber climate researcher Noel Keenlyside, supported by the UN's climate data analysis systems came to that conclusion. Faced with overwhelming evidence, Rajendra Pachauri admitted to Reuters earlier this year that there had been no global warming at any time in this century.

So does that mean that global warming was just a fantasy? Of course is isn't. That there's no need to reduce our carbon footprint? Absolutely not. But with American families reeling from 4 dollar gasoline that will just go higher, and a carbon footprint that punishes the most advanced nations while rewarding the worst polluters, it's time to take a common sense pause from this fanatical "they sky is burning" panic. It's time to plan a strategy that will work, not punish.

Let's begin with an idea I have to credit to columnist Charles Krauthammer who suggested that we adjust our gas tax to keep fuel at 4 dollars per gallon. That number seems to be the magic level that is effectively pushing Americans into smaller, more fuel efficient cars and reducing overall motor vehicle use. Voluntarily. Without government mandates. If we impose a similar tax on coal and natural gas, we'll find that home and office energy efficiency will be at the top of everyone's list. That tax money can then be mandated for use in alternative energy research and development.

Let's demand that the developing nations, including China and India place carbon emission reduction at the top of their national agendas as well. That alone will contribute substantially to a reduction in greenhouse emissions. And let's put some teeth behind that. While a tax on polluting Chinese goods may have other repercussions, we shouldn't allow other nations to blatantly despoil the atmosphere while we continue to fund their filthy manufacturing plants and punish our own families in the process.

Finally, let's get serious about alternative energy. Global warming isn't the problem. Oil and coal are. If we recognize that, and spend the money we're now wasting on politically correct half-hearted fixes, we'll have solutions that work. Not mindless ethanol, but real alternative energy that will stop the flow of oil and coal and in turn will take care of carbon emissions without artificial legislative mandates and partisan politics.

We've been given a break. Those who choose to accept science will see the window of opportunity to do this right for a change. Those who bury their head in the (warming) sand will live to see a nation still arguing over global warming, and suffering from ongoing draconian curbs 20 years from now.

Seize the opportunity created by this global cool off. It may not last, but it has given us the chance to change our world in an effective, intelligent way. Let's not blow it this time.

It would be wonderful if we could ask other countries to not attack us, and never worry again, but that's not how things work in real life. We can't just ask people to stop using drugs so we made them illegal, and now we have drug dealers. If we start banning guns, the only people who will have them are our police, military, and anyone smart enough and wreckless enough to do some damage. Removing citizens of their right to bear arms is an almost communistic view of ruling.

Everyone, please go to grassfire.org & sign the petition & send faxes to congress to let our leaders know how you feel about this issue

Some more info [by Anonymous Citizen on May 28, 2008]
about 2007 House Bill 1011 (Revising provisions relating to alien firearm licenses.)
I have found that many Washingtonians are not clear about 'aliens' and we need to define terms.
A green card holder like myself cannot apply for citizenship until a certain amount of time has passed, so legal aliens are not 'avoiding' becoming citizens.
Some 'aliens' are here legally but are not legal residents - for example, if Tony Blair came here on holiday he could not accept an invitation to go clay pigeons shooting with his hosts
Green card holders have already had interviews by the U.S. government offices /Embassies and have had physical examinations by government approved doctors and mental assessments and FBI investigations into them and their family. They have been measured and weighed and photographed and fingerprinted and had blood samples taken.
Why cannot the Washington Licensing authorities accept people who have had this level of scrutiny already ? If they would, then it would not solve the whole problem but it would be a good start.

Every legal 'alien'in Washington is very much against illegal immigration but many Washingtonians immediately think of illegals when they think of 'aliens'. I pay Federal tax on my world wide income just like a citizen and spend all my income into the Washington economy

The history of Washington State with it's treatment of Asians many years ago where they were not allowed to buy property or even rent is a thing of the past and all countries have regretable episodes in their pasts, including my own. Those episodes make it more important that issues regarding LEGAL 'aliens' should be treated in a modern and more enlightened fashion and Washington has an opportunity to do that at zero cost, allowing freedom only to responsible, validated, legal aliens.

Come on Washington; shows like 'Frazier' promoted Seattle as modern and sophisticated, so let's get the laws up to date so that image of the State is promoted and not undermined by these hang-overs from the past

So long as the changes benefit Washingtonians and keep them safe then there is no reason to hang back. The extra revenue will pay for the Police to crack down more on illegals and criminals.

Lane Spliting not what it appears [by Anonymous Citizen on May 27, 2008]
about 2005 House Bill 1176 (Allowing motorcycles between lanes during congestion)
I drive every day in that congested traffic, and in the traffic that flows into the congestion on California highways. Let me first state that lane changing at 25 mph is a joke. Motorcyclists lane split at much higher speeds, and that includes law enforcement officers. I live in fear that I will hit someone in my blind side one day. And, by the way, in the past month I have seen at least four accidents on the road I travel where that very thing happened. Stop this dangerous practice if you can. I wish that California was a bit more concerned about the safety of motorcyclists. I for one would be more than willing to let them take up an extra space in the flow than to worry about killing one of them.
